The Learning Umbrella

The learning adventures of a second generation homeschooler

Our homeschool sale

Last weekend, we did a yard sale.  Most of what we had to sell was books, so I put an ad in the paper reading: “homeschool family having a book and yard sale”.  I was really surprised at how many homeschoolers showed up because of that ad!  Before the start time for the sale, people [...]

Preschool math lessons

I recently checked a book out from the library called Eenie Meenie Miney Math! by Linda Allison and Martha Weston.  The book seemed awfully simple at first, and I almost just tossed it back on the return pile.  But then I noticed a few activities that looked ok, and I decided I’d try them out [...]

Clearing off the shelves

This last weekend, we drove up to my mom’s house to help with a dreaded chore – clearing off and sorting her book shelves.  My mother is a confirmed biblio-addict, and she’s also homeschooled four children.  She has a lot of books.
The motivation for this is a garage sale I’m having this coming weekend.  I [...]

Carbon’s Alphabet book

Last week, we made the A page for our alphabet book.  We’re using a top loading scrap book, so we can gather our items and tuck them in there before Carbon glues anything down.  We took pictures of the things we had made that were 3D, and Carbon cut samples out of things that were [...]

Some days aren’t meant for school

Today is one of those days.  I had to take my car into the shop, because the stupid Check Engine light was on.  They told me it should take about an hour, and I took the kids to the waiting room and set up camp.  Three and a half hours and two very hungry and [...]

Personality and homeschooling

Some people have been taking a quiz called What Kind of Homeschooler Are You?  I took it too, and it said I’m a Martha Stewart homeschooler.  I don’t completely agree, but I do like things nice and neat and orderly.
How much does your personality affect the way you homeschool?  I, for instance, could never be an [...]

Preschool starts tomorrow

Because we are starting a home daycare, I’m getting much more structured with my preschool plan for the kids.  We have a 2 1/2 year old starting with us next week, and this week we’ll go ahead and start onto the new schedule.  I think this will ease the transition for Carbon.
I’ve decided to go [...]

My Summer Reading List (so far)

I’m not finding as much time for reading as I’d like, but here are the books I’ve enjoyed recently:
The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
My husband and I got into a debate about the difference between a memoir and an autobiography, and we don’t know.  If you know, please tell me!
This memoir is an [...]

He’s reading – sort of, or, Carbon’s First Sight Word

I think it’s really funny what Carbon’s first sight word has turned out to be.  I think STOP was my first sight word, because I saw it all the time on the stop signs, and because Go, Dog, Go was my favorite book as a toddler.
But what does my son see all the time?  Apparently, [...]

Conference Time

Yesterday I sat down with my mom and my sister to have a conference about J.’s progress.  While I was off on vacation, she fell behind on her assignments.  We also have discovered that she hasn’t been doing her basic daily work (exercising, practicing the piano, etc.) because she’s been concentrating so hard on keeping [...]
