Gluten-free people and eating out
Apr 19th, 2007 by learningumbrella
So many people have been leaving comments that they are gluten-free also! Wow, I didn’t realize there were so many of us floating about in the homeschooling world. My mom was not surprised, however: “people who care to learn about their child’s special dietary needs will also want to personalize their educations, and vice versa” was her comment.
We usually have a very hard time eating out, as I’m sure other gluten-free folks also experience. That’s why the other night we were so surprised to find out that The Outback Steakhouse has a whole gluten-free menu, available upon request. My mom went there for her birthday, and she got the gluten-free menu and there was even a brownie type desert that was gluten-free. It just may have been the best birthday she’s had in years!
And another gluten-free thing I have to mention is a cookbook I found at the library:
This is not a gluten-free cookbook, but the author changed your traditional slow-cooker recipes to make them low-carb, and in the process I’ve found they’re also gluten-free now. She’s thickening things with guar gum, or you can just have them thinner. But you still have to be careful, because this is not meant to be gluten-free, like I said. But, I love to use my slow-cooker, and these are mostly working out great for me!

I was reading this at 7AM, and mentioned your news about Outback to my husband. At first he wasn’t convinced this was news (”well, of course you could go into Outback and order gluten-free”). But he was quite excited with the news of the gluten-free brownie, to the point of wanting to go *RIGHT NOW*.
Low carb cookbooks are a great idea for gluten-free diets. I also look at paleo-diet cookbooks, since they avoid both grains and dairy (another problem at our house).
Outback Steakhouses in New England are offering a gluten free bread option that is astounding. -GF hamburger rolls and bread baskets with the most delicious GF bread you’ve ever tasted. Yonkers and Clifton Park NY and West Springfield MA and Enfield CT all have it!
Can’t wait until this is available everywhere.
