Little copycats

Kids copy us, and they are keen observers of everything we do, even when we think they aren’t paying attention. Here is a funny conversation that I overheard yesterday:
DaycareBoy: “My elbow hurts, just like my Grandma. So I can’t pick up anything heavy.” Clutches elbow dramatically and refuses to pick up a toy.
Carbon: “Well, my back hurts like my mom.” Bends over a bit over the toy. “Ouch. See, I can only bend over that far.”
Daycare Boy: Puts hands on his low back and arches back a bit in the classic “low back pain” pose. “I’ve thrown my back out again. I’ll have to go lie down, and you can bring me something to drink.”
Carbon: Clutches his stomach. “Oh no, my belly hurts again. I think my dinner didn’t agree with me. I’ll have to go lie down too.”
I was laughing at it all, but their one-up-manship made me wonder if we adults don’t sometimes compete to see who is the most injured to get out of work! Sometimes the mirror they hold up for me is a bit scary.

LOL! I remember when my then-four-year-old nephew, a real tough boy’s boy who loves trucks, came up the stairs from his apartment clutching his belly.
“What’s wrong?” we asked.
“I have the worst cramps!”
“Oh no! Did you come up the stairs too fast?”
“No, just the monthly. Y’know.”
