Overheard today

The kids are playing “mommy”.  Daycare Girl is the Mommy, and Carbon is her “baby”.
Daycare Girl: “Time to get up, Baby!”
Carbon: “I’m too tired.  I don’t want to get up.”
Daycare Girl: “Come on, Baby.  You can wear anything you want today.  If it’s pretty.  And if I like it.”

Food prep and baking used to be my calm retreat activity.  When I was in grad school, I’d bake to relieve tension and procrastinate writing my thesis.  It was relaxing to gather, measure, stir.  It smelled good while it was in the oven.  And I always had treats to take to study groups.
Now, as soon […]

Fussy babies

If my posting seems shorter, less consistent, or perhaps my writing is off - there’s a reason.  My daycare baby (11 months old now), has been pretty much crying for three weeks now.  His parents are looking ragged, and report not sleeping at night.  I’m feeling ragged too, and thank goodness I only have him […]

Earth Scouts, meeting #1

We had our first Earth Scouts meeting last Thursday.  It went pretty well, and I’m hoping that the group will continue to move forward in a good, fun, and not-too-exhausting for me way.
More kids than I was expecting showed up.  Two families from my church came, and four families from the local homeschool group came.  […]

Hypatia is just thrilled to be old enough to make her own art.  Look at how happy she is with her finger painting.  It’s been awhile since I had a kid doing finger painting, and I’d almost forgotten how much fun it can be to spread so much paint around so quickly.  The older […]

Notes on the weekend

I am so tired!  Despite having a cold, I was pretty busy all weekend.  Luckily, my cold seems to have passed on without my having to rest much, so I’ll start my week off without that little bonus.
My weekend involved getting my driver’s license renewed, 5 days late.  I’ve never been late with something like […]

Things seem to be going much more smoothly around here.  I looked at my organizer this week, and realized I haven’t written anything down or used it at all in weeks!  And it’s not that my house is a mess or my life full of undone things - it’s getting done without lists!
Carbon’s school boxes […]

I’m currently reading buddhism for mothers: a calm approach to caring for youself and your children by Sara Napthali.  There are many wonderful things in this book, including a very honest chapter about the anger we can find in ourselves when we become mothers.  But the part that really spoke to me was a section […]

Happy Birthday to Me

Today is my birthday.  For some reason, I have always had trouble with birthdays.  I get melancholy and frequently feel disappointed or like I’m living under a cloud.  It’s my annual crisis.  Even before the birthday six years ago, when the towers came down while I watched on television, holding my forgotten birthday muffin in […]
