It’s the Process, Not the Product

So goes the wisdom on preschool (or children’s in general) art. It’s even in the title of this book we’re using right now.
Here’s the process (messy and fun)
Pour liquid starch in the middle of your large paper. Add a little bit of tempura paint (use real tempura, not Crayola poster paint because that just did not come out as nicely). Smear it around!
Rip up pieces of tissue paper and add them as you like. For extra sensory fun, just get the tissue paper really wet and squeeze it in your hand while dripping paint!
Repeat until you run out of table space for them to dry.
The dry product:

Mine loved collage when they were little, and our experience was much the same. How they loved smearing it all around!!! When a little older, we used Eric Carle’s museum website and his books as inspiration for some really neat pictures!
No emphasis on the product but look how cool it came out anyway! Even as mine ages, I try to include things that are about process, not product. Even if we aren’t creating a masterpiece, there is still skill and a lesson gained from the experience.
This is so true, about the process, not the result! I don’t have to remind myself anymore, I ‘ve stopped to be a perfectionist in some ways, and I began to enjoy the kids more. Thanks for sharing Carbon’s art work! look great!
