Tomorrow is World Fair Trade Day. I’ve volunteered at many Fair Trade information tables, and a lot of people seem to get Fair Trade mixed up with Free Trade. They are very different concepts. Fair Trade is the idea that people should be fairly compensated for their labor and their resources, and that work should be safe and sustainable. When you buy a product that is Fair Trade, it was made with the goal of giving people a living wage and decent work conditions.
You might have noticed that some coffee in the store is now showing up with the Fair Trade symbol on its packaging. I’ve seen some clothing marked as Fair Trade (that was really cool to see). And we have a shop in our town that sells all Fair Trade items: toys, musical instruments, clothing, ornaments, chocolate.
Fair Trade is another way you can use your consumer dollars to vote for the kind of world you want to live in.
