A good first day
Aug 5th, 2008 by learningumbrella
As requested by Jove, here is a brief recap of our recent changes.
I have been running a home daycare for over two years, staying home with my own little kids in this way. I recently got a new job, as the Director of Religious Education at my Unitarian Universalist church. This meant that I closed my daycare down, and got a nanny for my kids for three days a week.
So today was the first day Hypatia went over to the nanny’s house. I got her a First Nanny Day present, that we took over there so she would have something to open after I left. Actually, packing for the day seemed like we were taking everything but the kitchen sink: a diaper bag, backpack of toys and art supplies she wanted, lunch bag of snacks, sleeping bag, the present, and a bag of allergy foods. But most of that just stayed there, so I won’t have to carry it again tomorrow. She didn’t cry when I left her, and she was happy and didn’t want to leave when I picked her up. No wonder - they went and bought a wading pool together, painted, played with her present (a doll and mushroom furniture set from Magic Cabin), picked raspberries, read books, and went for walks. She fell asleep over dinner (I picked up pizza on the way home - we’ll have to work on having the energy to make dinner after work), so she was worn out.
As for me, I had a good day too. I got in to the office, and started sorting and cleaning it up. There was also a bit of stuff to do to set up my voicemail and all that, but really I spent almost all day sorting and cataloging books. There are a lot of great resources that were back in this corner of the closet, and I want to get them out and sort them so I avoid buying duplicate books. I have a lot of reading ahead of me, looking through those books.
I also wrote new registration forms today, so I can copy those tomorrow and get them mailed out. It really is nice having time to focus, time to work without the kids. I missed them today, but I really got a lot done.
Must do, however, is to get a better chair. My back is sore after sitting in a crappy chair all day.

Wow … your nanny sounds fabulous!
I am glad you had a good first day at work, too.
That sounds fabulous. And some kids actually like childcare by others, particularly if it is good quality. Sounds like you’ve found a good one. And the 3 day week sounds like a good balance for everyone. I bet the energy to make supper thing is just an adjustment, though you will always have some days like that.
The job sounds great. Are you under pressure to get a lot of Sunday School activities set up to start in September? Or is there a full roster of leaders all lined up? I’m very impressed with our Christian Ed coordinator. It seems like an interesting job.
Sounds like you found a great situation for you all.
I am so happy it is working out well for you!
(hugs)
It sounds lovely! In a perfect world, you would be the RE director in the same UU church that is home to my homeschooling co-op, so as the kids get bigger they could take a full day of classes while you were working!
