Even science can get old after awhile
You know how kids will latch onto a video and want to watch it over and over again? And you know how parents get REALLY REALLY sick of Barney or Thomas or The Wiggles or whatever?
There have been some times in my life that I’ve wanted to “lose” certain videos, and I’ve always thanked goodness that they were from the library and my kids would have to accept its due date as being the end of it all. I’m so glad I don’t buy very many of these things.
I didn’t think there would come a time that I would want to “lose” a Nova special, but Carbon’s desire for more science has led to an obsession over the Nova special Mars: Dead or Alive. We’ve watched it over, and over, and over again. He has built a replica of Spirit out of his duplos (that’s one of the Mars rovers, for your information). He has explained to me several times “why the parachute was squidding” (that’s when a parachute doesn’t open, for your information). He is genuinely very sad that the rovers never came back to Earth again, but were “abandoned” up there. He makes “rocket blast” noises all the time, that result in him spitting all over me. (OK, just a little bit of spit, but I’m sensitive to spit). He is very concerned about “design flaws” and “having a failure” (when something doesn’t work as it was meant to).
Of course, this is great. This is learning. This is what homeschooling is all about.
So, how come it’s driving me crazy? Thank goodness it’s from the library.
This is a cute story! My kids have had similar obsessions. There was a Nova or a Nature about giant squid a while back and we must have watched it 200 times! Well, maybe not, but it sure seemed like 200 times.
I think it’s really sweet that he’s sad that the rovers didn’t come back to Earth!
LOL! Sounds kinda familiar!
[...] rovers. He has been obsessed with Mars rovers for quite some time, starting back when I wrote this post. He really wanted to touch the models, and I bet he was actually itching to take it apart and see [...]
