Yesterday I took Carbon in for his annual doctor visit, and they asked him how many vegetables he eats. He told her “lots!”. And it’s true, I think the kids have a very healthy relationship with food. Part of the reason for that healthy relationship is our garden, and part of it is our CSA share [...]

My kids are a little less than 3 years apart in age, and recently they have really come to a stage where they enjoy playing together. It’s a beautiful thing to watch them together, in fact. This 3 year old girl and 6 year old boy have been:
1. Dancing together, mostly to the album Philadelphia [...]

After being gone from the kids for so long, last week I wanted to do something fun with them. On last Tuesday, full of anticipation and motivation, Carbon whizzed through all his schoolwork (even his piano lesson!) in time for us to leave before 10am and drive up to the zoo.
The kids are animal and [...]

I started yesterday on what I thought would be a simple tidy-up of Carbon’s room, but discovered that the mess had gone too far. He tends to stuff things out of sight when I tell him to clean up, so there were odds and ends stuffed behind furniture and in the corners of the closet. We [...]

Last week I took the kids to my cousin’s art show, which was the result of her senior year in college here in town. I told the kids we were going to an art show, and when we got there Carbon was upset to discover that that meant just looking at art, and not doing [...]

It doesn’t matter what you do with your kid and money – somebody is going to think that is the wrong thing. If you give an allowance, you’ll hear folks say “they should have to earn it!”. If you pay them to do chores you hear folks say “they should have to do those chores [...]

For Carbon’s family/adult birthday party, we had the extended family over to our house and had a Wii Tournament. Carbon picked the events, and he made medals ahead of time that the winners could be awarded. It was good-spirited competition, and lots of fun.

One of our family traditions is to let the Birthday Person pick the dinner menu (or restaurant if it’s my birthday). For Hypatia this was easy, because she picked chicken and rice, and then we added some vegetables to round it out. But for Carbon, this can be challenging. He has interesting taste. For one [...]

My little baby is six years old! I can’t believe it. Not a baby anymore, for sure.
His birthday party was really nice. We didn’t hire a clown, but his friend there has a clown for a dad, and they came straight to the party from a city festival that Jusby was working. So, we got [...]

We were driving by some road work, and Carbon asked what the roadcrew was doing. I told him they were putting on new blacktop.
Carbon: “what’s blacktop?”
Me: “It’s a kind of cement, mixed with oil, that’s why it’s all black and gooey like that.”
Carbon: “Oil!? That sounds pretty toxic!” (and then he rolled up his window).
Hypatia: [...]
